At Affiliate Summit West 2011, I was lucky enough to participate in a panel with Kim Rowley (KIMarketing), James Keating (ShopWiki), and LisaPicarille (LisaPicarille.com) about Monetizing Pop Culture.
Although some important changes have happened since the presentation (Panda and Penguin), the information we gave is still solid. Our main agenda items were:
- Identifying and Tracking Pop Culture Trends
- Establishing Pop Culture Sites
- Generating Content and Following
- Monetizing Techniques
- Shortcuts
What I loved about this panel was that we each came at things from different places and had different perspectives. That made the advice really well rounded and comprehensive. Watching the video again after 18 months, I’m actually taking notes from some of the things that Kim and James said to incorporate into my sites!
As a followup on some of my pop culture sites that I referred to directly or indirectly in my presentation, Twilight went the distance and the 5th movie is highly anticipated; the Hunger Games movie was huge and filming for the second movie has begun; Diary of a Wimpy Kid turned out a third movie and the 7th book is on the way; Sookie Stackhouse is about to appear in her 13th book and the True Blood Series continues; the Smurfs are going to be appearing in a second live-action movie; and a second Percy Jackson movie is being made.
I also received my first cease and desist letter for a domain, but nothing has become of it (fingers crossed).
